‘The CASS’, Centre for Art, Science, Sustainability is a British Art and Design Association (BADA) project to establish a place of excellence on Hilbre Island that investigates and promotes the arts, science and sustainability.

Hilbre and ‘The CASS’ provide a perfect opportunity for local, national and international artists, scientists, ecologists and more for research and collaboration to generate new ideas inspired by an environmentally sensitive location. Hilbre is a unique island, archipelago nature reserve with a fascinating history, unique flora and fauna, birds, animals and more. It is set within a dramatic natural context surrounded by one of the world’s highest tides.
There is no usable drinking water, mains electricity or waste systems on the island as most of the buildings were abandoned when the last warden left the island 20 years ago. These buildings, four of which are grade two listed, date from the 1840’s and includes a Telegraph Station, part of the innovative Holyhead to Liverpool Telegraph network and a fascinating maintenance workshop for repairing navigation buoys on the approached to Liverpool with associated houses for their crews.A small number of volunteers have begun to repair the buildings and initial activities with artists and scientists have been organised by BADA.

Vision
Creative research to date includes the national “Being Human Festival” November 2024, the Hilbre Independent Biennial June/Sept (2025) with over 25 artists from the UK, Europe and beyond and the British Science Festival Sept 2025. Liverpool John Moores University and Leeds Becket University are already involved creating opportunities for students and staff to use Hilbre as a centre for research and creativity.
The development of ‘The CASS’ will evolve as more people become involved and its worldwide connections expand. This fascinating project is at an early stage, and we would be pleased to hear from you if you wish to become involved in any way as a professional, a student, a volunteer, friend, associate or patron.
You can contact us, in person on Hilbre, or by email, website or the QR code below. We look forward to hearing from you.
“Through the Arts, Science and Sustainability, we hope to help protect the earth for our children’s future.” Terry Duffy artist and CEO of BADA.
